Suchitoto more than a tourist destination!

Location

Located to 47 Km . and to 30 minutes of San Salvador in the province of Cuscatlán.

Its nahuat name means, Place of Bird and flower, Suchitoto, a colonial town is considered, with a great architectural beauty and cultural wealth.

The beauty of its location; composes by a spectacular view of the Suchitlan Lake, formed by the reservoir of the Lempa river, its paved streets and old large houses, with its magnificent old balconies.

 

OLD CITY

This is a place of great historical and cultural importance finishing the power of the pipiles (Indian tribe) in the year of 1528, with the arrival of Don Diego de Alvarado, Old City (ciudad vieja) was installed in the village of San Salvador known today as “The Bermuda” and it is located to 12 km of the city of Suchitoto. At the moment; it is in ruins.

The residents had to counteract some indigenous attacks after they were conquered.

Some of the residents of the village of San Salvador moved to the Valley of the Hammocks where the great San Salvador is now. In 1545 the village was abandoned. At the present time, only vestiges and pieces of walls are observed, they are in investigation process to discover the original draft of the city.

HACIENDA “THE BERMUDA”

One of the most impressive colonial houses of the colonial time, is here where the first conquerors as Bartolomé Bermúdez settled down for the conquest the construction system is of adobe bricks with stone foundations, with beautiful wrought (forged) iron balconies. The walls are covered with lime and sand, being completely in ruins after the armed conflict.

CHURCH OF SAINT LUCIA

It is not known with accuracy the antiquity of Santa Lucia's church that was built in honor to the virgin of the same name, and it is characterized by its architectural beauty. It possesses a north chapel in honor to Crucified Jesus and a south chapel built by Juan Santamaría, consecrated in 1902 to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the church, Jesús Nazareno's image, whose sculptor is Kirio Cataño. can also be appreciated In the pillars there are imported of Italy

SUCHITLAN LAKE

This impressive artificial lake was created in 1973 by means of the reservoir after the realization of the hydroelectric dam of the Big Cerrón. Its sheet of water has an extension of 135 km 2 what transforms it into the biggest lake of El Salvador .

This lake is one of the main attractions of Suchitoto: for its extension and surface and also the quantity of fish and birds that exist in it. The tourists can enjoy boat or travel in the ferry, that has capacity to transport 4 vehicles and up to 100 people. During this tour; you will be able to enjoy beautiful flora, fauna and different islands like: “The Birds Island ", The Lovers, The Salitre, The Chaparral, The León, The Donkey, Trinidad etc.

Some of the riverside close, bordering, populations are: San Francisco Lempa, San Luis of the Carmen, Colima, San Cristobal , Corozal, Platanares, San Juan , Caulote, Pepeistenango and Copapayo.

HOUSE - MUSEUM OF DON ALEJANDRO COTTO

It is one of the landmarks most well-known of the City, built by the famous and grateful artist, film director, and Salvadoran writer, Don Alejandro Cotto.

Among some attractiveness of the artist's house museum are: old pieces, saints, furniture of the colonial time, a printing, an invaluable art collection, art gallery; they reflect a historical sample of Suchitoto. This house is surrounded by a beautiful garden, fountains created by himself and a magnificent view to the Suchitlan Lake .

The house was donated to the state and the town of Suchitoto , by Don Alejandro in 1999. Access it, has a cost of $4.00, per person, this contributes to the expenses of the Permanent Festival of Art and Culture of Suchitoto.

THEATER OF THE RUINS: PERMANENT INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ART AND CULTURE

Artists of more than 30 countries have participated in this festival along the last years, festival that gathers diverse exponents of the fine arts, which celebrates its anniversary with a parade of national and international artists during every weekend of the month of February. During the whole year they diverse cultural activities are carried out in this theater.

The festival already takes 14 years in search of a unique goal, to inculcate the culture at all levels and offering its hospitality to all the artists and spectators in the Theater “The Ruins”, which is built in one of the first three tiled houses of the municipality; being this, witness of multiple cultural activities for many years.

Production OF CIGARS PUROS (HAVANOS)

Mainly they are made in the Concepcion 's Neighborhood. The cigarette's sellers are well known because they manufacture their products in their houses.

CASCADE " LOS TERCCIOS "

"LOS TERCIOS " is a beautiful cascade that ends in the Lempa river. Formed by columns superimposed pieces of gray granite, those give the idea of heaped firewood logs.

The waterfall “Los Tercios” is located in the gulch “The Souls”, scarcely to 1 ½ Km from downtown Suchitoto. It's amazing because the spectacular composition of the vertical wall of the cascade formed by hexagonal blocks of carved fine stone.

Its singularity is that, this forms the bottom of the cascade. The height of the jump can overcome the 10 meters . In the dry season forms a singular image; in the rainy season the water descends by the blocks, and reaches a greater landscape value.

Its access is formed by less regular and often crumbled remains of rocks equally of its original location.

Highlighting its curious form; different legends are told: such as the gold fish (pescadita de oro).

HACIENDA COLIMA

It is one of the few bases of country property of the colonial time, still conserved in good state, with an antiquity of more than 200 years. Attractiveness of the place include: a protected natural reservation, an artificial lagoon (canoe tours and handmade fishing), different species of birds, sport court, horseback ride in the protected area, and some antiques. The lands of the country property were of the most productive in the area, belonging to the family Orellana Valdez and Company. Here was produced: Indigo, Cotton, Cattle raising, wood, Cane of Sugar and later on, the panela (unrefined sugar cane). Since 1932, it became sugar refinery.

QUETZALAPA RIVER

Quetzalapa means River of Quetzales (in Nahuat), is one of the few Salvadoran rivers with crystalline waters, It possesses a fishing area and vegetation by its surroundings; it belongs to the basin of the Dirty River .

Río Quetzalapa runs south-east from Suchitoto, constituting, in certain tracts its limits with the municipalities of Cinquera and Tenancingo.

Its river bed presents, in several parts, big basaltic stones that contribute to its greatness, the accesses to the river are very varied for the municipalities of Cinquera, Tenancingo and Suchitoto.

In the place you will be able to enjoy an atmosphere of quietness in direct contact with the nature, as well as of a refreshing bath, or rest among the trees.

BOAT RIDES

There is service every day and you can visit the Hermit's Island ($10.00) to admire the forest and to camp. The journey takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. You can also visit the Island of the Birds ($20), the journey takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. In this island, you can enjoy watching birds like herons and ducks, among many other species of birds. You can also visit the impressive of the Cerrón Grande Dam ($40) walk in the dam and observe the immense variety of nymphs in the area.

Diverse activities like artistic exhibitions are developed here.

CITY RELIGIOUS PARTLESS

The city parties take place from December 6 to December 13, in honor of the Immaculate Concepción and Santa Lucia virgin, saint of the town.
